The HMC V7 Recovery DVDs perform a full installation of the Hardware Management Console. You can perform installation or upgrade tasks by using the Recovery media alone, or by upgrading to or installing HMC V7 over the network. (The recovery media are not always needed for network installation.)

Prerequisite tasksOrder the appropriate set of HMC V7 Recovery DVDs online from Fix Central (recommended). Alternately, you can download the ISO images for the HMC V7 Recovery package from Fix Central, and then create DVDs from these ISO images by using your favorite method to create DVDs. The HMC V7 package consists of two or more Recovery DVDs. It is highly recommended that you obtain this media from IBM. If you wish to download the ISO images and burn your own DVDs, please make sure high-quality, single-layer, DVD-R media is used. Do not use DVD+R or DVD-RW. Review the following notes carefully:

Because the HMC is a closed system, you cannot download the ISO files onto the HMC. There are no utilities available to burn DVD media on the HMC.The combined size of these two files is greater than 1 Gigabyte. If you are downloading these files to a server, please make sure that the operating system can handle files of this size. For UNIX systems, use the ulimit command to check the file size limit, and then change it, if necessary. Do not use the browser on the HMC to download the file onto the HMC. The download and save functions on the HMC's browser are disabled.You must perform a Save Upgrade Data task to preserve information on the HMC before upgrading to HMC V7. There is no Corrective Service to update the HMC to HMC V7 from any Version lower than HMC V7. You must upgrade immediately after the Save Upgrade Data task. If you restart the HMC again without doing the upgrade, you will need to log in and run the Save Upgrade Data task again, before you perform the Upgrade.
Upgrade the HMC to HMC V7 via Recovery media
The DVD drive opens an the following options are displayed:
1 -- Install additional software from media
2 -- Finish the installation at a later date
Please enter your selectionSelect Option 1 and press Enter. The following prompt is displayed:
Please insert the media into the drive and press Enter.Remove the first DVD, insert the second DVD into the DVD-RAM drive, and then press Enter to complete the Upgrade.
The HMC restores the data preserved by the Save Upgrade Data task, and then completes the booting process. During this process you are prompted to select the language and keyboard mapping.At the Hardware Management Console login prompt, log in using your user id and password.Accept the License Agreement for Machine Code twice to complete the HMC code update.Verifying a successful update
After the HMC is rebooted, follow these steps to verify that the HMC upgrade was successful: Select Welcome from the Navigation panel.Point your mouse over the HMC Version link on the Content panel to display the Version information.Verify the version information of the upgraded HMC 7 release in the appropriate Version 7 Readme, either online in Fix Central or at one of the above links.
Installing HMC V7 via the HMC V7 Recovery media
You can use the HMC V7 Recovery media to perform a full installation of HMC V7 via the "Install from Media" task.
At the HMC interface, follow these steps to perform a clean installation of your HMC from the Recovery DVDs.Reboot your HMC with the first DVD inserted in the DVD RAM drive.The HMC reads the media in the DVD RAM drive and displays the Install/Backup/Restore wizard.Select Install and click Next.Select Install from media and click Next.Click Finish to start the installation process.When prompted to insert the next media, remove the first media, and then insert the second media into the DVD RAM drive.Select Option 1 and press Enter to continue the install.When the second media is complete, the following options are displayed:Restore critical console data from DVD media.Finish the installation.Do one of the following:
If you are performing a clean installation, select 2. Finish the installation.
OR
If you have Critical Console data backed up from the HMC that was running Version 7, and wish to restore the data, then select 1. Restore critical console data from DVD media.
The HMC then completes the boot process.At the Hardware Management Console login prompt, log in using the hscroot user id and password.Accept the "License Agreement for Machine Code" twice. The HMC installation is completed.Verifying a successful update

Upgrade the HMC to HMC V7 via Recovery media
Before you begin the upgrade task, read and follow the instructions in the Prerequisite tasks section.
You can use the HMC V7 Recovery media and the HMC "Upgrade" task to upgrade your HMC to HMC V7 from HMC V6 R1.3 or higher. For special steps that must be taken to upgrade from HMC 6.1.3 and lower HMC V7 releases to a higher Version 7 release, please refer to the following special upgrade instructions.
Special upgrade notes for HMC V7 releases
Follow these steps at the HMC interface to upgrade your HMC by means of the Recovery DVDs.
Select HMC Management.Select Save Upgrade Data.Select DVD, then click Next.Click Finish.Wait for the Save Upgrade Data task to complete. If the task fails, contact your next level of support before proceeding.If the Save Upgrade Data task is successful, remove the DVD-RAM, insert the first Recovery DVD into the DVD-RAM drive, select Shutdown or Restart.Select restart and click OK.The HMC reads the media in the DVD-RAM drive and displays the Install/Backup/Restore wizard window.Select Upgrade, and then click Next.Select Upgrade from media, and then click Next.Click Finish to start the Upgrade process.The DVD drive opens an the following options are displayed:

Installing HMC V7 via the HMC V7 Recovery media
Before you begin the installation task, read and follow the instructions in the Prerequisite tasks section.
You can use the HMC V7 Recovery media to perform a full installation of HMC V7 via the "Install from Media" task.
For special steps that must be taken to upgrade from HMC 6.1.3 and lower HMC V7 releases to HMC 7.3.4.0, please refer to the following section of the HMC 7.3.4.0 Readme:

Upgrading/Installing over a network
Alternately, you can upgrade to HMC Version 7 over a network. The "Special upgrade notes" still apply, but when the specified conditions are met, you can then install over a network instead of using Recovery DVDs.
